Why I Started My Business:

I have always been in sales and sold intangibles – such as travel, corporate travel incentive award programs, hotel room sales, booth space, etc., and I would wine and dine professionals at all levels – “lunch” was very big and I could not help but notice others’ manners. The way some would hold their glasses, i.e., with all five fingers (the “death grip”) or grasp utensils (“the banjo grip”) was noted. I saw the president of ABC and the GM of XYZ company doing this and thought, they have forgotten and need to be reminded, or perhaps they don’t know how and need to be taught.”  I further thought silently, “There is a need!” – to remind people, to reinforce, to teach the basics of (dining) etiquette because if I noticed, others surely noticed, and their (lack of) attention to table manners was not serving them well. In fact, the high esteem that I had held essentially from “go” by virtue of their title, notoriety or business success placed (silent) high expectations which were not met. Oddly enough, this only served to empower me (!) – which is a tenet of my new book, “How to Stand Apart @ Work … Transforming “Fine” to Fabulous!” (Morgan James Publishing Co, The Entrepreneurial Publishing Co TM, New York.)  I started The Etiquette School of Boston in 1993, teaching the basics of etiquette and dining to children, teens and young adults and now work with students and professionals at all levels of the organization – and have, for twenty years, this year.
