Mindset

“Mindset” is defined as “a set of beliefs or a way of thinking that determines one’s behavior, outlook, and mental attitude”.  It is an idea discovered by world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck in decades of research on achievement and success.

Mindset are beliefs about yourself and your most basic qualities. Think about your intelligence, your talents, your personality.  Are these qualities fixed traits or are they things you can cultivate throughout your life?

In a fixed mindset, people believe that their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent are fixed traits.  They spend time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them.  The also believe that talent alone creates success – without effort.

In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work – brains and talent are just the beginning point.  This view created a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.

Leadership competencies include having an open mindset, increasing their capacity to learn.
